V54 artist residency students’ works review

the photo took from 16Aug, which is the beginning of final week of their stay. with some individual tutorial in-between, and another teacher commenting their works, finally, some of them changed idea (with limitation?) and some of them keep moving on with the original ideas (which I am happy to see the path and result). here I recap their works process with some reflection for my teaching experience.

Heaven’s work with the story with a friend from Italy, met when they were small. And castle sculpture representing the playground which also named as castle. the weathering decay effect he observed would apply on the castles to show the timeline that he met and disconnecting with the friend. recommending him to buy some small-scale-figure, showing the scale of castle, and also the situation of them, Heaven and his friend. think the narrative is funny and somehow romantic. hope he is ok to handle the changing of decay painting. 🙂

Sopia’s work with a canvas of V54 window’s shape and would paint the morning atmosphere, in an abstract way. Is a nice canvas, and she will use spongy to paint, I agree the spongy would be a good way in painting like fog or like…impressionism’s painting….something presenting lights.

ar 秋’s work with the melting wax, and painting in black/white, the street, representing he feels hot and melting walking around here, since so many slopes and he not knowing the transporting well. the black/white also represent his dizzy feeling. recommending he focus on the wax sculpture as that should be the main item. so far he got much idea

David’ work keep in a secret mode, hope everything’s alright…XoX

>>>no photo……-_-

Leah’s work, happy to see she keep going with her initial idea, which is quick drawing the people around Happy Valley, inviting them to post it back with sharing written on the back. when I visit Leah that day, she receiving many of the return postcards. could see how exciting she was. The next step for her is just wait for the postcard, and thinking how to display well in the exhibition, guiding people to see how she connect the community with drawing postcard.

Julie’s work using picture frame to imitate window frame, drawing classic building around happy valley. she try to use watercolour as it is soft and pretending some older times. Adding horse as happy valley got some horse walking in old days, she said. recommended she to use various size of picture frame, like from small to large. to enhance the visual impact instead of really imitating the windows. well but, she still buying same size frame….-_- anyways~

Ellis seems confusing since he got another tutorial that not supporting him to make 3D mixed media. and he is not confident to keep going on that…..so he was told to stick with his drawing skill, drawing something, still, related to his findings, birth and death, for me, I think that’s ruined the chance of staying here…well but that’s another topic that I would like to write/ record, in another chapter…or actually could be a topic for studying doctorate. yea…back to here…he’s drawing something about that, and I recommend him to break the frame with some installations, like, putting something out of the frame. to enrich the idea of birth/death…like eggs, leaves or sth else.

summer’s work is similar, at the beginning she would like to do something abstract about illustrating sounds, she already recorded and would like to use the sound wave to do the works. however, tutorial with other teacher and saying she better illustrate something real….then she draw…ladys….on each canvas, and she not feeling happy about that, she also questioned why I really need to draw that….I agree and found she is not very happy if the final work is like that…and I suggested her to make use of the exhibition wall, enlarge the “noisy” she illustrated by the mixed-media…she still a bit unhappy and hope her final work would got some excitement.

all their works are now 70-80% completed, hope to see them all satisfy the final work in the exhibition on 19Aug2021.

Impressive exhibition in Centre Pompidou

I am lucky to be in Paris as Pompidou is show the artist – David Hockney. The exhibition clearly shown the various works of him, while his works are easily to be defined the time line.

Starting from the printing when he arrive New York, the works show how an artist facing problems like pricing of works, money for life, etc. those context reflecting the life of beginning art/ design life.

as no photo is allowed in the show, here are some I searched in google.

the painting of men’s body & all painting about swimming pool, showing his ability of painting and precise color use for reflection/ transparent texture. Those are impressive.

Screen Shot 2017-07-17 at 11.17.44 PM.png

some paintings also show how he make use of new medium, like adding acrylic board on painting, (this one I need to search or photos from souvenir book)

***

The section of two portraits, those paintings are very good examples for composition balancing, I am sure will share them to students:

christopher-isherwood-and-don-bachardy-1968.jpgT03255_10.jpgT01269_9.jpg

yea the timeline with different style shows Hockney willing to change or using new medium for creating. here’s the serious “joiners” which is collage of photos. in 1980s, impressive and breath taking when i saw it.

hockney-pearblossom-highway.jpg04-the-scrabble-game.jpg

the scrabble game that one seems not filling whole canvas but the duplicate faces are showing people with quick changing face expression. and the 1-person view inviting us to join the game.

later on the section of collage of landscape paintings, which Hockney drawing huge paintings with limited space….that inspiring me, for making my installation or painting or …sculpture anyway. the biggest one seems like 5m x 10m (will photo from book)

road-two.jpg.650x0_q70_crop-smart.jpg

with final section of Hockney’s video taking , still like his collage landscape drawing, with 4 seasons. shocked me as the artist really keep changing medium but still keeping some of his style.

Unpack show 2016 by Hyphen

After the “thank you london” by the Hyphen Project 2016, I am exhibiting another work in Hong Kong. This is the 4th unpack show by The Hyphen, it’s my pleasure to join and getting know to the fresh graduate from London as well.

This year the unpack show exhibiting ten designers and artists, with various professionals like interior design, architecture, fashion, set design…etc…and including my work, which is an installation. I am showing the work “Melt Away” which was came from my lipstick collecting campaign; I collecting wasted lipsticks and spreading the message of palm oil over used, causing the deforestation problem. This is a side project from my graduation project. I am happy to display and showing  my friends, donors the work, at the same time, keep delivering the message in Hong Kong.

As I also wanna see the response from Hong Kong, where the culture and mindset is totally different from Europe. It seems the result is positive and audiences like my concept as well. And I am sure I will continue the similar topic.

Reflective from Final show (continue)

The show is finally ended and my studying of MA in UAL ended as well~ but still, I wanna continue to work on endangered animals art in the future, so I drop some point to remind myself here~ (yea just continue from my last post)

5) as Omar with a good response, not only adults but also the kids…..this reminding me….educational project should also target to new generations. Since they are young and will be contributing the world one day in the future, if we change their living habit in the early stage…..or letting them start a good behavior, that’s definitely helps.

6) as suggested by Oscar, the project itself have so many information to deliver….I’d better develop a series of visual communication so that not only talking with them, even I am not in the show, the message is also delivered successfully.

Reflective from Final show

Today is the third day showing in Camberwell. I am now in the show place and seems a very good journey and sharing when talki to the audiences. The Lipbalm Tiger “Omar”, although not going as what I expected, people keep doing graffiti on it….but….that’s good! as long as people enjoy the activity and getting to know more about the story.

here’s some opinion, feedback, from my mind or guests.

1) to cast more the same size with different colour, letting audiences to crave it….and therefore, everyday journey is written on the tiger, plus more space provided to audiences

2) my pleasure to invite the sculptor, Raphael, to come and crave the tiger stripes, he suggest me a way for souvenir, using a pot of lipbalm, letting audiences to dip and take away….yea …could develop form for that.

3) so far from my observation, people in this country are really into wildlife conservation…they are interested in and supporting the wildlife.

4) inspired by Yujin’s work…..I think there should be some metal casting lipbalm (with Omar’s head) as souvenir, sell them and making money for donation to the forest conservation.

RA graduation show

Today went to the Royal Academy of Art, graduation show, with some interesting materials art. giving me impact.

P1140327

This artist got several pieces using different materials, mixing them…this one by wax, I think is mainly candles, to create the lighting effect….well I think the yellow ribbon or paper strip not necessary and disturbing the composition…but the candle he/she using is creative and looks great…texture, time, gravity….many things let audiences to feelP1140329 P1140330

the other artist using various materials, PVC, ketchup, sugar, plaster….etc…to create sculpture…more like experimental project…and the show do not have all artists’ concepts and personal statement….which making me confusing.P1140337

showing works just on the floor….is good or bad? I think easy to be broke and yea….better have a plinth for eye level….maybe is his/her idea.

P1140340

This one artist use photo paper exposure under moon light….to see the amount of algae and the colour relationship. there is a water current and algae setup, useful?helpful? hmmmmm…..not really….could improve by demonstrating  a real exposure or tube management

P1140353

yea…here’s the description

P1140349

I like the following the most….artist using glass fabric…acrylic (I think) to cast the metallic tube on ceiling…something really dull and dirty…..after casting by her, Rebecca Ackroyd….it become colourful and attractive

P1140356 P1140358

public art/ installation when you arrive RA…o, I need to plan the application for picton prize~!!!P1140365

Extinction Prediction/ Uni work update

Just read an article in HK yahoo, saying that the Earth is having the 6th extinction period very soon. The main reason included deforestation, pollution and global warming. Species extinct in a rapid rate, which is 100 times than the average speed recorded before. Chain reaction starting from environment damaged, food chain, climate change….all growing like a snow ball.

ref: https://hk.news.yahoo.com/%E5%9C%B0%E7%90%83%E6%AD%A5%E5%85%A5%E7%AC%AC6%E6%AC%A1%E7%89%A9%E7%A8%AE%E5%A4%A7%E6%BB%85%E7%B5%95-091400149.html

whenever see the report or news about this, I feel what I am doing is right, I prefer working and creating art in this direction…rather than topics about politics problem.

impact from Hyphen moving gallery

Yesterday 11am-3:30pm I am showing the tiger lipbalm in the Exhibition Road, is collaboration with Hyphen Project, bring out the message of “thank you London” at the same time. As a art student, I thank London for the Museum and Gallery all around, the respectful to artist so that I could got impact and inspiration to my works.

So, after the day, keep talking to the passerby, answering the questions about my works. I gained a lot, here I am dropping some notes about what is good for the on going project.

1) there should be a name for the tiger, a gender as well? so…yea the coming 4 sculpture….I’d better give them names.

2) I met someone worked in the Synchronicity Earth, which also for environmental protection, will invite them for the final show.

3) a student also working on similar project, about palm oil issue, I share my blog to her and feel that the UK education is good to let student know such topic.

4) met some people like my concept and the topic I am working on, that’s encouraging me much.
