Unpack show 2016 by Hyphen

After the “thank you london” by the Hyphen Project 2016, I am exhibiting another work in Hong Kong. This is the 4th unpack show by The Hyphen, it’s my pleasure to join and getting know to the fresh graduate from London as well.

This year the unpack show exhibiting ten designers and artists, with various professionals like interior design, architecture, fashion, set design…etc…and including my work, which is an installation. I am showing the work “Melt Away” which was came from my lipstick collecting campaign; I collecting wasted lipsticks and spreading the message of palm oil over used, causing the deforestation problem. This is a side project from my graduation project. I am happy to display and showing  my friends, donors the work, at the same time, keep delivering the message in Hong Kong.

As I also wanna see the response from Hong Kong, where the culture and mindset is totally different from Europe. It seems the result is positive and audiences like my concept as well. And I am sure I will continue the similar topic.

Art related to animal extinction

As I am writing my research proposal, so that I need to back to research on any art related to animal extinction. Found this flash page is quite useful, it have a geometric 2D form of the animals, and when we click in, got more information.

another editorial in 2011 showing 3 Turkish artists doing similar thing. For me, the presentation method is somehow like the beginning of my MA project development, of course they present in a fine finishing way, stil, I think there should be more concise in the reason of animal extinction. here….melting or disappearing just like the branded ideas in my project development.

and this article inspire me….different way for helping wildlife conservation…I think somehow the proposal could be develop through the points it written

Reflective from Final show (continue)

The show is finally ended and my studying of MA in UAL ended as well~ but still, I wanna continue to work on endangered animals art in the future, so I drop some point to remind myself here~ (yea just continue from my last post)

5) as Omar with a good response, not only adults but also the kids…..this reminding me….educational project should also target to new generations. Since they are young and will be contributing the world one day in the future, if we change their living habit in the early stage…..or letting them start a good behavior, that’s definitely helps.

6) as suggested by Oscar, the project itself have so many information to deliver….I’d better develop a series of visual communication so that not only talking with them, even I am not in the show, the message is also delivered successfully.

Tiger Mould update/ Elephant Clay Modeling

Last layer for the tiger mould:

P1050674 P1050679 P1050681 P1050683 P1050686 P1050687 P1050688

the shape of top left corner is mainly for the standing while casting, due to the direction that mixture going in is from bottom right, so….and yea, save some plaster as well, haha

When the mould of Tiger, Rhino and Orangutan were already finished…meanwhile, the biggest one is being modeled at home, this one I use some blending tube instead of the hard and straight tube I used before…..P1050658 P1050659 P1050661 P1050665 P1050668

quite like this radical form with the tube…but no idea of how to cast and moulding

P1050669 P1050671

keep it wet keep it fresh

bought the tube for modeling, have to insert wire (3 lines together) in order to control the tube in shape.

P1050689 P1050691 P1050692 P1050693 P1050696

yea, like a spring ….looks funny….hm….good in standing, but seems not perfect yetP1050697 P1050698

support for standing

P1050701 P1050702  P1050708 P1050710 P1050711

to be continued tonight and hope to finish the mould this week

Sculpture update (Rhino/Orangutan/Tiger)

RHINO update

last layer for the rhino moulding

finished, remind myself the screw could not be inside, now the wood board could not separate…is not good for next step…e.g. drying and opening of mould.

open it!

P1050581 P1050583 P1050584 P1050585

P1050586 P1050591

the dividing not very successful, hope it do not affect the casting so much

the lower piece, bottom left corner not firm and hard enough due to not mixing well of plaster….to be careful of washing

starting from wooden frame and wire to form the basic structure.

P1050501 P1050502 P1050503 P1050504

putting the clay on

P1050509 P1050512

after 2-3 nights…keep editing the….this model is difficult in balancing, and I want to make a good form with my style as well….so finally finished

P1050522      P1050539 P1050540 P1050541 P1050542 P1050544

now go for moulding, something to hold his back so that it maintain “floating” on the plaster

as the form is complicated…leaking always happen

P1050566 P1050568

this is what I said “floating”

P1050570 P1050572 P1050579

the mixing of plaster should be in quick and accurate amount…CONCENTRATE P1050593

finally I divided the mould into 7 pieces, and the rhino one just 3

P1050595 P1050597

all wooden board removed for opening

TIGER update

same…begin with wood and wire

P1050547 P1050549

clay on…this one ….difficult on standingP1050551 P1050553 P1050554

rough shape

the back…top view…I love the shape very much….a bit similar to my toy (battlecat from he-man)

P1050560 P1050562

almost finish, the gain or pattern will be sculpt after casting…..since those pattern will further make the sculpture weak…crack….and adding difficulty to the moulding …….and….one of the reason is every tiger’s pattern are individual….like fingerprints of human…so sculpt it out would be fun!

P1050603 P1050604 P1050608

keeping it wet by plastic and wet towel

bring to uni and start moulding

the eyes take me so long for crafting, editting and crafting back and for….

the hand’s are cracked and brokennnnnnn! this one is too challenging, coz I do not have a stand for it….how to make it floats on plaster?!

finally start….remember to spray oil, on both the clay surface and plaster dividing, is really useful!!!11124198_10156320105695377_1675461180_n 11273437_10156320105555377_247124178_n 11350150_10156320105605377_1791372618_n 11421419_10156320105755377_977041436_n

to be continued~

Rhino Sculpture update/ lipstick collection update

Here’s the clay model for the rhino, I will make a 3-piece-plaster mould, I am quite satisfy with the result, when comparing to the sketch and design, it’s almost the same. At the same time, I added some gain/ stroke?! to the sculpture, that’s inspired by the cracking dry skin from rhino itself. I twist a bit and make it like the tiger style…..so that’s my style!

last time stopped here, almost the shape came out, just need to modify the surface and add the other leg

P1050427 P1050428 P1050429

starting the surface fine tune, add the other leg the the same time.

P1050432 P1050433

here I adding the grain from the tube in the back

P1050436  P1050439

for eyes, nose…I keep using the same style to present them

P1050440 P1050442

here we could see the grain clearly, however this version is a bit too much and distracting the whole art piece…it dominated.

so I simplified it a bit~

final work, tomorrow will bring back to college for mould making

P1050446 P1050447 P1050448 P1050449 P1050450 P1050451

For lipstick collection, there are some responses from HK friends and UK friends, but I found there would be a lot more needed, and therefore I google ” UK makeup artist / expert” I emailed and Facebook messaged many (10 pages search of google). Hope there are more donated by them.

And, Some already being posted to me….hope my project really bring the message to my friends.

and thinking of elephant….the 4 sketches before….not yet perfect….so keep sketching:

Starting the rhino sculpture

I am now starting to make the rhino sculpture, this time I will make the shape clean and the lines easier for the mould. Because a better mould could cast more and better result

11271938_10156211714850377_2005010469_n 11304553_10156211714920377_930311673_n11268131_10156211714780377_487397748_n 11251566_10156211714715377_323888234_n

start to use wire and cling film to hold it tight, and putting clay on top.
