toys from Japan

that’s toys about endangered animals again, funny and cute. Although it haven’t mention that they are endangered animals……polar bear, gorilla….all are in the list~ by making them with a hunting post, that’s funny and letting us think of hunting or being hunted….and green, color of nature~ certainly that’s inspiring me~

for me, not very special, idea is straight forward but reminding me many different people making similar stuffs. On the other hand, I will ask is that a product? or art? or something else? that would also important to my project.

Tiger metal casting 2

continue~

P1040860

soft wax used to make the joins fatter, but the main linkage cannot rely on that.

P1040862

straws are used as other method of runners

P1040863

little “worm-shape” wax as runner as well. since too much and close runners will may the grog crack….and damage the mold

P1040865

P1040866

meths will be spread on the wax before painting a layer of grog on it.

P1040868

clay was used to detach the whole model, or it will stick on the broad.

P1040869

P1040870

P1040871

fine grog ( fine ceramics : paster is 2:1) painted on.

P1040872

P1040873

P1040874

P1040876

P1040877

risers added afterwards (similar to runners), but runners is for liquid metal running while risers are for air go through. Without that, metal cannot go through properly.

P1040880

P1040882grog wall making, because the mold will be inverted afterwards, wall between cup and risers was to ensure enough support.

P1040883

P1040884

plastic bag for remaining humidity

P1040889

inverted….since many inner surfaces could not be reached by fine grog

P1040892

P1040893

P1040894

P1040896

almost finish….adding extra risers

P1040898

P1040899

paint it together with grog

P1040902

using flat metal to surround it, clays on the bottom avoiding grog leaks. recycled grog are used to cover the whole object

P1040913

P1040914

lifting for fire

P1040919

final check for nothing blocking the risers

P1040920

P1040922

P1040923

P1040924

P1040926

P1040928

after firing, the mold is fragile, we have to use paster with net (3 layers) to hold it.

P1040931

P1040932

net rope with paster

P1040933

metal bar also for enhancing the structure

P1040935

o….my mold is full of smoke…why?

P1040936

Becky using vacuum cleaner to check the risers

P1040937

P1040938

metal pouring

P1040939

P1040940

after one day, we dig it out

P1040942

P1040943

P1040944

P1040946

P1040947

the smoke is because of some wood not burn out yet, some turned into charcoal….that’s also means that the mold is not perfect and some parts could not be reached by liquid metal

994134_10154420375715377_6307054957433848015_n 10488139_10154420375150377_4393094920798857532_n 10540392_10154420375555377_6145214644021584659_n 10557196_10154420375360377_170325960867719553_n 10557198_10154420375815377_3946563559250889001_n

final outcome……less part can be cast, only the joins and some bottom parts. It is because 1) joints are fatter. 2) mold is too big, heat cannot reach inside well…..that’s why some wood just turn to charcoal.

during the interim show, Michael suggested me to use wax for the original model so that it melts easier and won’t turn to charcoal. On the other hand, try to use the technique named “ceramic shell” for casting. will search it out!

ceramics testing update

in order to find a better materials to build the animals, I test with ceramics. paper rope with slip.

P1040834

P1040843P1040857P1040858

the outcomes are fragile, very fragile. and the shape could not be that straight. Thus, I use the wooden rope withe slip, and with tissue absorbing slip is better after the trial.

P1040887

this one is wooden rod with tissue, shape is there but seems not under control cause of tissues.
