how the book describe extinction

Reading a book:

– Extinction is a natural process, occurring ever since life began.

– Evolution and extinction of species are inextricably linked. “two sides of the same coin”

– Those species that cannot survive in the fact of change – they become extinct.

Dinosaurs dominated the world ages ago. After their extinction, mammals evolved and diversified, and humankind came out. This simple sequence of cause and effect….let me begin thinking…..human just like dinosaurs, dominating the world now…..and animals keep dying or extinct because of our “need”. Thus, we don’t need to care about that? “No” is my answer, I think all animal conservation friends are finding the way to educate or raise the awareness others…..try the best to let “us” live together. Especially humankind are well developed organism, different from dinosaurs, we choose our way, we decide what we want.

“Size Matters” mentioned in the book also inspire me….like tigers, rhino, elephants, gorilla are all in huge size…that may be one of the reason why people keep hunting for huge horn, huge tusk, huge pattern skin……so….should I make my art piece a smaller scale to let it stay longer?! if my work stay longer in the world, more people could see and being inspired?!

Endangered animals X-ray Art

An origami art by a Japanese Takayuki Hori, making artpiece by X-ray. By folding it up, the transparent plastic form the animal. The black and white tone skeleton with the colorful rubbish inside their body….clearly deliver the message why the marine wildlife killed by the pollution. That’s amazing!!! As the topic is same as what I working on, and also the narrative….and message delivered as well.

and today have tutorial with Barnaby, I have present what I am working on…(that wooden frame animal concept + recording specific animals data). He seems ok with my idea and ask me to make more minimized scale model…..and choose one from them to make a large one. He also suggest me to contact more animal conservation organization to come and see the MA show in July.

For that origami x ray concept……could that apply to my wooden frame!? or how could I add the specific data to the frame art!? here’s a challenge.

Ai Weiwei Exhibition

Visited the Ai Weiwei exhibition yesterday. The sculpture “Forever”, connecting many bicycles…letting me connect the infinity concept by MC Escher. I love the pure silver color tone. Counted the numbers of wheels….could be divided by 3….wondering if that concepts is linked with Chinese “3..3…unlimited, 6…6….infinity….”

CSM Fine Art Grad show

Monday 26May2014 I attended the graduation show of Central Saint Martin’s BA in Fine Art. The following are those interesting art projects.

1) Wire Horses that hanging on the ceiling:

The 1:1 scale/ motion captured/ materials used/ displaying method/ location are all impressive to audience. That’s also similar to what I did for rhino before, but much larger scale here. At this moment I am asking my flatmate for the artist’s contact….would like to further share ideas with her, about this art piece and also my animal extinction project.

 

2) The installation with red fabric

The experience walking in and out is amazing, is something like a maze/ extended path/ infinity?/endless path?…..etc

Other interesting work: there are many art work inspire me, by their size, technique, finishing, media, concepts, use of space…..making me….breath taking. I need to jump out of the box, especially the limited space in Camberwell, like what Shane said….think of my art piece location….giving audience a shock!

 

Tutorial with Shane

Today is a group tutorial day with Shane Waltener,

” My original proposal is to make something out that letting audience know the reason of animal extinction and raise their awareness. The idea is now changed a bit, more focus on attracting people’s eyes and letting them curious about if the animal existing or extinct.” and I showed the “exist or extinct” to Shane.

1) What his first response is, the object itself is to inorganic form, and my topic is something about nature and organic, organism…etc.

2) He recommend me to think of the size, this one is not bad because people can keep walking around and feel the art piece. On the other hand, locating is also important and making the art piece interesting. e.g. handing on wall, or putting somewhere people not expected, like the situation that people finding out the truth, or just like people going to the jungle and find out the animal. Or even you will hurt (affecting) the animal(the art piece) when you discover it.

3) its interesting if I could make something interactive, like the people now walking around the art piece. What if the art piece walk around the audience?! Moving somehow = living. Non – moving = dead?! that’s sounds cool! MC Escher could inspire me if I go on the illusion stuffs.

4) toys that with strings inside, when people push it, it breaks……haha, the interactive mechanism may helps.

5) what I should do?! search data on animals….(if I want to develop specific data reflecting specific period’s animals situation. Try to work on other animals but not only rhino. think of time base (4D!?) for the art piece. Shane also advised dramatic situation may help making people shocked and aware the story.

Saving Tigers Exhibition “Thrive”

last friday visited an exhibition, curated by a multimedia artist Lauren Baker. Aim to raise awareness of tiger extinction and also funds to save them (selling the art piece by auction).

“Tiger Bomb” – mushroom cloud with lots of tigers shadow inside. like saying tiger extinction is a disaster, they are disappearing…

Tiger chopsssss (could not find in brochure, but I like it very much!!!) is a picture of Tiger’s head, consisting 3,500 numbers of tiger chops (which is the no. of tigers in the world right now). That is funny if the artist keep doing that every period of time…..will the picture become smaller and smaller? and finally nothing?!

An impressive toy set for killing animals

this toy set inspire me much, about killing animals for home’s trophy, or for a carpet, what if they back to live?! I think somehow this funny set would bring me some idea, so keeping it here as ref.

My selfing unit series were selected by UAL as one of the show in the Milan Furniture Fair 2014.

I am happy to be one of the student showing works. There are many other students/ Uni in the venue including Finland, Holland, Sweden…..etc. However I seems still confusing between design and art…..what’s my work should be? what direction I am going for? What other show I would like to join? so many questions coming out after that.
