New Painting Series in Holland (1)

After the Scotland trip. I took coach and arrived Amsterdam, is a very nice city with well arranged cycling path. However, maybe due to the unfamiliar or more busy city. I have not draw much…until I went to the Van Gogh Museum, saw the invaluable collection and the exhibition with Munch comparison with Van Gogh. I got much impressed by them. Meanwhile, a friend of mine having a new restaurant in London, he wanted to decorate with my painting. I was thinking, I like Van Gogh’s painting so much, and I am now in Netherland, why not paint a series that inspired from Van Gogh’s painting? I chose several objects like Sunflowers (which is an iconic painting of Van Gogh) and Kingfisher (I don’t know this painting until I enter the museum, and kingfisher is a beautiful bird that I known when I was small). I observe and googled and keep searching for photo. And adding some story into the painting so that related to restaurant – eating. Completed the 1st series “Kingfisher hunts”, is 3 postcard-size painting. First one showing kingfisher on branches waiting for something, watching the lake. Secondly the moment it dive into the water, like a rocket, and finally the scene that it comes out with the fish hunted. Here I also some of my practice piece:

This one is so greedy that I want to put so many elements into a small pictures with my limited watercolor skill. elements included – underwater, fisheye, distortion, windmill on the ground) so the outcome and composition is not good.

After this failure, I keep searching photo and practice, some of them as follows:

And the other series is the sunflower, how to link it with eating? I added bee into it. and there are two pieces. the “Feast” and “Take Away”. I wanna bring audiences into the sunflowers garden, feel as a bee feel…and a perspective that they going back quickly after the mission. They are on 300g paper, 200 x 200mm each.

Painting Journey in Scotland

The painting trip was in September 2015, I did several paints with watercolour and ink pen. I am not familiar with this thin transparent medium and it is a good practice for me. I believe the landscape drawing is good training on my observation, illustration, as well as the color skill.

Arriving in Inverness bus station, walking around andthere are so many seagull, this pair attracted me that the darker one (I guess is female) is in a weird form.

This one is in Helmsdale, a river with graves, I mainly use the green and yellow for natural environment, while purple for old housing and also the river.

The next day in a cafe inside the Timespan Museum and Arts Centre, Helmsdale.

The harbour in Helmsdale, I try not to use ink building the frame first. but found that still very difficult to shape the object. so…I still need to frame things by ink pen….XP

The coast in Brora, golf club, was impressed by the nice environment. I spend longer time on this painting due to the good climate, and wind is not as strong as the day before.

The other one drawing from the other side of the above painting, was attracted by the broken boat growing lots of flowers, I try not to use the ink pen this time. objects are fatter but still a good composition and colour arrangement.

Brora Train station, with less train and people, I just sat on the platform and drew.P1160638 P1160598 P1160605 P1160629 P1160630 P1160641

The sunset in Inverness, have to draw quickly due to the period is so short. The colour keep changing in every second.

the castle in between Inverness and Skye, Eilean Donan Castle; I like the method I used for the sky, same proportion of yellow and blue, and WHITE, “leaving blank” is a very important skill in watercolor, I keep trying.

The Urquhart Castle with Lochness, spend about 2 hours for this painting…the outcome is not bad but I just don’t really feel happy about this picture…

P1170070 P1170072 P1170080 P1170069 P1170067

until the next day I sit in a cafe….I realize the painting is too much like something in textbook….without personal style, just keep drawing and looks alike……so I added some fantasy into it, the Nessie…so that the picture have some story in it. 🙂

P1170092 P1170093

Arrive Edinburgh, the Scott Monument was so beautiful and I know I need to draw it. Keep searching for a good spot which can see clearly and with good lighting….finally I sat under it and drew with a special perspective. That maybe an influence after I attended the MC Escher exhibition there.

P1170571 P1170572 P1170558 P1170559 P1170560 P1170563 P1170565

I like this practise and still keep thinking of the picture. Next day I drew the scene including me inside.

These are the painting that I did in Scotland, September2015, some of them posted to my family and friends, there are so many scenes and building good to draw. some of them I do not have time or I took photos, will continue the painting some time later. And is a good try even the watercolor is not my familiar medium….I do keep thinking of what if I got acrylic there…but carrying watercolor is definitely easier.

Sculptures by Peter Gronquist

just found one artist combining taxidermy with objects like guns and company logo, to raise the awareness of endangered animals (or animals killing). By hunting, or by company like McDonald and handbag company…etc. as I stil reading his works, I cannot give any judgement at the moment…but they are impressive for sure.

obviously…hunt for horns~

Art related to animal extinction

As I am writing my research proposal, so that I need to back to research on any art related to animal extinction. Found this flash page is quite useful, it have a geometric 2D form of the animals, and when we click in, got more information.

another editorial in 2011 showing 3 Turkish artists doing similar thing. For me, the presentation method is somehow like the beginning of my MA project development, of course they present in a fine finishing way, stil, I think there should be more concise in the reason of animal extinction. here….melting or disappearing just like the branded ideas in my project development.

and this article inspire me….different way for helping wildlife conservation…I think somehow the proposal could be develop through the points it written

Animal against Human

searching on lion Cecil, would like to read the whole story, getting inspired or making some artwork to raise awareness of animals’ right…seems this Friday would have a complete TV programme from ABC news, 10pm

found that the dentist hunter Walter Palmer also hunted polar bear before…wt……yea, he is famous now…and wondering his clinic still opening or not….I just wanna say…”強者只向更強者拔劍…”<<< read from some comics or forum ages ago..translate to English is “Strong guy only face the sword to the stronger guy….but not those weaker”

this is a good quote for all hunters….they hunt for “glory”….display/show the heads in the house…just telling others how weak they are.

and found a clip of a 2m width eagle attacked the flying camera…reason probably is protecting their nest. the video is short but reflects me that they(animals) only defense from human, they just wanna sleep well; but we keep occupying or destroying their living habitat.

Today met a fashion student in library, she applying animal/ wildlife structure into fashion design. The term for those structure called Biomimicry. Not only learnt a new term but also inspiring to my sculpture development. As biomimicry applied on many products, design, etc. like….during my sculpture development and tutorial, sometimes I was being asked “why making animals form….shapes….why not other….” Well, for me I just felt very directly, using the iconic animals’ form to represent the wildlife, or deliver such message. but yea…after I search a bit for the biomimicry images, found that actually the scientific or random shape from wildlife could also be part of my sculpture, neither the animals form nor abstract development. The biomimicry itself attracting eye balls in another way…with specific order, specific function and specific shape.

egrg biii ooo

and again….happy to meet artist working on project related to animals/ wildlife.
